Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Chronograph

As a complete and utter devotee of the myriad permutations of the dive watch, I sometimes have to remind myself to take a closer look at some of the other sporty - but non-dive watch -- options on the market. With this in mind, today we're looking at a recent chronograph made by Jaeger-LeCoultre, a brand that doesn't even so much as produce a dive view in its current catalog. And though I will always lament the passing from the entirely lovely Deep Sea Chronograph, today's offering comes from the Polaris family, and it offers a more cut-and-dry take on a modern, sporty chronograph from one of Switzerland's best-known watchmakers.

For the uninitiated, the Polaris line offers a range of mostly steel everyday sport watches that start just under $10, 000 and the line even includes a rather slept-on Polaris Perpetual Calendar model in steel that starts at $36, 100. For this review, we're looking at the actual recently refreshed Polaris Chronograph.



Measuring 42mm wide with a steel case, the Polaris Chronograph is 13. 5mm thick as well as 48. 5mm lug to lug. From launch, there are two colorways available : blue or grey. You can have your choice of a bracelet or a textile strap, and both options also include a rubber strap. All mounts are, thankfully, quick-change capable. Featured in this story is the lacquered blue dial on a bracelet and the blue rubber band, a combo that carries a list price of $14, 800.

This is not the first modern wathe to wear the particular Polaris name, either, as the line originally launched within 2018 having a black-dial timepiece in either steel or even rose gold. For 2023, we get a new movement and new dials.



Following the loosely vintage-inspired design for typically the Polaris line, the Polaris Chronograph has an expansive switch and a thin bezel. The dial is actually wrapped by a black tachymeter scale with orange accents, and the base dial provides a gradient blue-tone finish that is achieved through the use of more than 30 layers of varnish. The end result fades from a bright glowing blue to a near black and feels like a rather dressy format for a sporty steel chronograph. In the metal, I was reminded associated with some of the funky, colorful Sixties chronographs from Glashutte Original, but the Polaris feels much more modern and also reserved. To that end, if the azure feels too warm or perhaps colorful for you, the grey offering has its own appeal.

With no date display, the Polaris Chronograph supplies a simple execution of the complication with a 30-minute register at three and a central time counter seconds hand. The register at nine shows the current running seconds. Dial text, too, will be kept to a minimum, and there are subtle orange features marking the total count for each subdial. The final layer regarding functionality is established by an oversized marker design that uses "12" along with "6" numerals alongside otherwise applied blocky markers that draw the referential connection to early Polaris models.

The large hands tend to be semi-skeletonized (to offer something of a window to the subdials), and there is lume at the tips to match that of the markers. The lucerna is good for this sort of watch, in addition to JLC appears to have used Super-LumiNova BGW9, so while not as bright because C3 or the more modern X series, it does appear white in daylight and glows blue when the light fades.

While I likely wouldn't call the call layout specifically beautiful, legibility was not an issue, and I think JLC's designers did a nice job of capturing the legacy of the Polaris aesthetic while adding any chronograph rapid and now some extra color plus texture instructions into the mix.

The case sits wide and even flat on my 7-inch wrist, and its shape and finishing are quite complex, with short beveled lugs, a polished bezel surrounding often the sapphire crystal, brushed flanks, and polished touch points for the stop-watch pushers together with crown. The back side reveals a display caseback and confirmation of this nice chronograph's 100 meters involving water resistance.
